Wow. I’ve been an absentee landlord the past couple months. I guess I feel like I haven’t been doing much in the way of shareable stuff. Lately though, I’ve decided I need to make a concerted push with branding myself. If I’m going to take the freelance thing seriously I should show what I can do with my materials. Below is an iPhonesque icon I made simply to show I can.

The next is an invoice.

Aside from my business card, there probably wouldn’t be anything else that is given directly to a client. There’s always the web page I guess. For that, there are plans for masonhastie.com to resolve somewhere else rather than back here.

Last month I also worked on a remix for a friend of mine in Tokyo. I’ve only sent it to him and one other person, so I guess this is the debut.

Feel free to criticize any of this crap in the comments.

So not a lot has been going on here since the little redesign. I am working with my hosting company to get Opentape up and running so I can share with you the playlist I made for a “Mixtape” party where I won “Best mix to make love to”. Very different from “Best mix to fuck to” which was won by a very dirty, DIRTY mix, created by the hostess, natch. Mine is more of a slow jam collection. Opentape is pretty easy to set up, it’s just server-side tech BS that’s giving us problems.

Also, I bought a synth the other day, the infamous microKorg. Used by brazillions and zillions of bands, it’s a super affordable faux-analogue deal which sounds great. At last year’s Sled Island, about two thirds of the bands had one on stage, both local and international acts. Super versatile. I got mine for about half of retail price at a pawnshop near my place.

Lastly, if you are actually interested in my well-being, I’ve been home sick from work yesterday and today, which has involved drinking lots of tea, watching a lot of The IT Crowd, The Daily Show and Colbert Report, and noodling around on previously mentioned synth. So far I spent about two hours creating the perfect west coast g-funk Dre bass fart sound.

When I found out Jamie Lidell was having a remix competition I nearly lost it out of every orifice. Getting a chance to make something from the vocals of one of my favourite artists and having it (probably) heard by the man himself is pretty exciting. The mix is up, I posted it on my MySpace page… (I assume with his blessing). So go download it! It is a little rough around the edges, as I only had three (!) days to work on it, but I guess that could be part of its charm?

I have some new music available for download, but not on the music page here. I wanted to keep it separate from that older material.

It seems MySpace is the place to promote amateur music, so that’s where it is. Not that the MySpace demographic is who would necessarily be listening to my stuff, but since my demographic is essentially me alone anyway, that doesn’t really matter, does it? I may get myself a page on Garageband.com soon, but I am not sure if it is worth it. I would like it if you downloaded rather than streamed it if possible, I try to pay a lot of attention to the nuances of the sounds and they are totally lost to the compression. This same attention to nuance would be why I never get around to having an actual melody.

p.s. Is Dæus X McKenna too pretentious of a name?
