The desert island top 5.

Last night I was asked to choose five albums to be stranded on a desert island with. I’ve played this game before and my list always comes up short. It’s a tough one.

Last night I accidentally denied myself Suede’s Dog Man Star, which I’d replace my last item with (sorry, Boss):

1: Spiritualized — Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space
2: David Bowie — Low
3: Scott Walker — Scott 4
4: Beastie Boys — Check Your Head
5: Bruce Springsteen — Nebraska
5: Suede — Dog Man Star

The only reason I chose the Beasties over Bruce is because I needed something upbeat. Check Your Head is the only hip hop/funk album I’ve listened to for over 15 years and not gotten sick of.

What are the albums YOU can’t live without?

I've recently taken a shine to Bruce Springsteen's The River. Actually like it more than Nebraska.

    In no particular order:

Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
    Small Sails – Similar Anniversaries
    Animal Collective – Strawberry Jam
múm – Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy
Modest Mouse – The Lonesome Crowded West

I really want to put Terry Riley – In C on there but I think on a desert island it would eventually make me go insane. Pixes – Surfer Rosa was fighting to get in there as well.

    1. Elliott Smith – XO or Either/Or, it'd be a last min call.
    2. Pink Floyd – Animals
    3. Atmosphere – Seven's Travels
    4. Fleetwood Mac – Rumors
    5. Ice-T – O.G. (Original Gangster)

What about Digable Planets – Blowout Comb? 15 years later still good.

    1. Modest Mouse – The Moon and Antarctica
    2. Bruce Springsteen – Nebraska

Those are the first two… I'll comment again later when I give it more thought. Picking just 5 is hard for me.

Bill – I'm a fan of The Fragile as well. Underrated. My Autechre go-to album is the one that was packaged in the grey case.

Eric – I've been meaning to, but haven't gotten around to yet. Hard to find a reasonably priced copy that isn't scratched to shit. Might just download it.

Colin – asked on another day, I might have put Lonesome Crowded West on mine as well.

Sean – Never pegged you as a Fleetwood Mac fan. We have more in common than I thought.

Kara – I haven't listened to that album in a long long time. If I remember correctly, I liked it, but found it a little repetitive.

If by gray case you mean gold-ish case? Was it one solid colour? I mean, all of their disc jackets that were done by the Designers Republic are kinda the same. I dunno. Maybe LP5? EP7? Fuck it. All I know is that over my be hangs the two 12" records for the Cichlisuite EP.

I would also agree that Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is another good pic. One may also add Bjork's Post, and Tricky's Maxinquaye. Don't forget about:
Iron Maiden – Number of the Beast
    Mastodon – Leviathan
Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works II
    Michael Jackson – Thriller
Arab Strap – The Last Romance
Murder By Death – In Bocca al Lupo
    Beck – Sea Change
    Soul Couching – Ruby Vroom
    Skinny Puppy – Bites/Remission
    Belle & Sebastian – Tigermilk

There are so many albums that stand the test of time. Limiting to just 5 is cruel and unusual!

Blonde Redhead – Misery Is a Butterfly
Boards of Canada – In a Beautiful Place out in the Country
    Bola – Soup
    Bowie, David – Scary Monsters
    Daft Punk – Homework
    Dead Kennedys – Frankenchrist
Del Tha Funky Homosapien – Deltron 3030
    Depeche Mode – Violator
    Four Tet – Rounds

The list, it goes on and on.

For me, this exercise tells me more about myself at the present moment than what my favourite albums are. If I just close my eyes and breathe and let the lizard brain do the choosing, then the five float to the top. They will be different from day to day. Like the way Nebraska was switched to Dog Man Star, I felt just that much more pompous the day after and needed the string swells.

Attempts to Compartmentalize.
